Ahmad Tejan Kabbah was a very important leader from Sierra Leone. He served as the third president of his country. He held this role during two different times. First, he was president from 1996 to 1997. Then, he served again from 1998 to 2007. Kabbah was a man who studied many things. He was an economist and also a lawyer. He spent a long time working for the United Nations. This job helped him learn how to lead people. He worked in many different places across Africa.

Kabbah's life began in a small town called Pendembu. He was born there on February 16, 1932. His parents were both very religious Muslims. His father was a businessman of Mandingo descent. His mother was part of the Mende ethnic group. Kabbah grew up in the capital city, Freetown. He learned to speak many different languages. These included English, French, Susu, Mende, Krio, and Mandinka. He went to school in the United Kingdom. In 1959, he earned a degree in economics. Later, he became a practicing lawyer in London.

In 1996, Kabbah became the president of Sierra Leone. He won the first free election in many years. This was a very big moment for the country. However, his time in office was very difficult. A civil war was happening at that time. A group called the RUF fought against the government. This group was led by a man named Foday Sankoh. In May 1997, the military took control of the country. This forced Kabbah to leave and live in Guinea. He stayed in exile until he could return.

Kabbah worked hard to bring peace back to his home. He signed several peace agreements with the rebels. One important deal was the Lomé Peace Accord in 1999. He also asked other countries for help. The British government sent troops to Freetown in 2000. The United Nations also sent many peacekeepers to help. These soldiers came from places like India and Pakistan. They also came from Bangladesh and many African nations. These groups helped to stop the fighting and restore order.
