Later, he went to Government College Bida. He joined the Nigerian Army on 10 December 1962. He even trained at the Indian Military Academy in 1963. Babangida spent many years in the military. He fought in the Nigerian Civil War starting in 1967. In 1969, he was a commander in a group called the 44 Infantry Battalion. In 1985, Babangida led a coup to take control. A coup is when the military takes over a government. He took power from General Muhammadu Buhari on 27 August 1985. He also created new security groups like the State Security Service. His time in power is often called the Babangida Era.

His rule brought many big changes to the country. He started programs like the Structural Adjustment Program to fix the economy. He also started MAMSER to help people work harder for the nation.
