He was very active in helping workers. Because of this work, he was even sent to live in France for a time. This period of his life helped shape his ideas about how a country should be run.

In 1982, Gbagbo helped start a political group called the Ivorian Popular Front, or FPI. He wanted to bring new ideas to his country. In 1990, he ran for president for the first time. He did not win that election, but he did win a seat in the National Assembly. This meant he could help make laws for the people. He continued to lead the FPI for many years. He even became the leader of the FPI Parliamentary Group from 1990 to 1995. His work in the government grew steadily over time.

Things changed a lot in the year 2000. A military leader named Robert Guéï took control of the country. Guéï did not let other leaders run in the election. However, many people in the streets protested against this. They wanted a fair vote for everyone. After the protests, Gbagbo became the president of Côte d'Ivoire. He served as president from the year 2000 until 2011. This was a very important time in the history of his nation.

In 2010, there was another big election. Alassane Ouattara ran against Gbagbo. The election observers and many world groups said Ouattara won. The Independent Electoral Commission said he got 54% of the vote. But a different group called the Constitutional Council said Gbagbo won with 51%. This disagreement caused a civil war in the country. Sadly, about 3,000 people died during this period of conflict.

It was a very difficult time for the people living there.

In April 2011, Gbagbo was arrested by forces that supported Ouattara. He was sent to a special place called The Hague in November 2011. He had to face the International Criminal Court to answer for things that happened during the war. He was the first former leader to be held by this court. In 2019, the court decided there was not enough evidence to prove he was guilty. They dismissed the charges against him. Finally, in April 2021, he was allowed to return home to Côte d'Ivoire.
