In 1982, he started a group called the FPI. He ran for president in 1990. He did not win that time. But he did win a seat in the National Assembly. In 2000, he became the president. He won after people protested against a military leader.

In 2010, there was a new election. Alassane Ouattara won the vote. Many groups said Ouattara was the winner. But Gbagbo said he won too. This led to a civil war. About 3,000 people died during this fight.

In 2011, Gbagbo was arrested. He was sent to a special court. This court is called the International Criminal Court. It is in a place called The Hague. The court looked at his actions during the war. In 2019, the court said there was not enough proof. They said he was not guilty. He was finally allowed to go home to his country.
