He is known as the founder of Ossetian literature. This means he helped start the tradition of writing in his people's language. Kosta was born on October 15, 1859, in a mountain village called Nar. This village is in the Alagir gorge of North Ossetia–Alania. As a young boy, Kosta was a drawing prodigy. This means he had a natural gift for art.

People had very high hopes for his future talent.

Kosta's journey as an artist was not always easy. He attended the Stavropol Gymnasium from 1871 to 1881. Later, he went to the Saint Petersburg Academy of Arts in 1881. However, he had to leave the academy in 1885. He could no longer afford to stay because of financial problems. He lost his stipend, which was the money meant to support him.

Without this money, he had to do hard physical work to survive. He eventually had to return to his home in Nar.

Even after returning home, Kosta's talent continued to shine. He became a very successful painter. He created famous works like "Children Stone-breakers" and "In an Ossetian Hut."

One of his most famous paintings was of Saint Nino. This painting was so realistic that people gathered to look at it. Some people even poked the canvas to see if it was a real statue! Later, Kosta shifted his focus toward writing. He wrote poems in both Ossetian and Russian. His book "The Ossetian Lyre," published in 1899, became very important to his people.

Kosta was also a brave man who spoke up for what was right. He often criticized the Russian government for things he thought were unfair. Because of this, he was exiled from his home twice. His first exile was from 1891 to 1896. His second exile happened from 1899 to 1902.

These forced moves were very hard on his body and mind. The second exile, in particular, made him very sick. He eventually returned to his home in 1901, but his health was weak.

Kosta Khetagurov died in 1906 in a place called Labæ. His life was filled with both great art and great struggle. He is remembered for his focus on humanism. This is a way of thinking that values truth and the progress of people. His poems often showed the lives of ordinary people. Many other famous poets, like Robert Burns, wrote about similar themes of justice. Today, people in Ossetia still use his words and wisdom.
