Hendrik Frensch Verwoerd was a central figure in South African history. He served as the Prime Minister of South Africa from 1958 until 1966. Many historians call him the "architect of apartheid." Apartheid was a system of institutionalized racial segregation. It was designed to ensure white supremacy in the country. This system controlled almost every part of daily life.

Before leading the country, Verwoerd worked in several important roles. He served as an editor for the newspaper Die Transvaler. He used this position to promote Afrikaner nationalism. He also acted as a political strategist for the National Party. This helped the party win the general election in 1948. After the election, he became the Minister of Native Affairs in 1950. In this role, he began to shape the country's social structure.

As Minister of Native Affairs, Verwoerd created many specific laws. He drafted thirty-two bills related to native affairs between 1950 and 1953. One major law was the Population Registration Act of 1950. Another was the Group Areas Act of 1950. He also wrote the Bantu Education Act in 1953. This act put all education for Black South Africans under his department's control. He used these laws to enforce "separate development." He argued that different races should live apart to reach their potential.

Verwoerd's government used strong methods to maintain control. He was an authoritarian leader who suppressed political opposition. He banned several organizations, including the African National Congress. He also banned the Pan Africanist Congress. Thousands of people were detained or sent into exile. Many others were sent to prison. Under his leadership, the state's security forces grew much larger. South Africa had one of the highest prison populations in the world.

His policies led to significant international consequences. The United Nations General Assembly passed Resolution 1761. This resolution condemned the system of apartheid. Because of this, South Africa faced international isolation. Other countries began to use economic sanctions against the nation. Verwoerd also helped change the country's status. In 1961, he proclaimed the founding of the Republic of South Africa. He remained the leader of this new republic until his death.
