This phase moved the conflict from organized warfare to something much more difficult to manage.

Native Africans were also interned in camps to prevent them from helping the Boers, resulting in 20,000 deaths.
The conflict finally ended with the Treaty of Vereeniging in May 1902.
Most Boer leaders accepted the terms to ensure the release of people from the camps. The former republics were transformed into the British colonies of the Transvaal and Orange River. In 1910, these areas merged with the Natal and Cape Colonies. This merger created the Union of South Africa, a self-governing colony within the British Empire. The war left deep scars on the region and influenced British politics for years.
