Chewa language

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Chewa is a way of speaking. Many people use it in Malawi. They also speak it in Zambia and Mozambique.

In Malawi, it is the most common language. People speak it mostly in the central and southern parts of the country. Some people call the language Nyanja. In Zambia, Nyanja is the name people like best.

Chewa has many different sounds. It has five short vowel sounds. These are written as a, e, i, o, and u. Some words also have long vowels. For example, the word for "big" has a long sound. Some sounds are made by sucking in air slightly. This happens with the letters b and d.

Different groups use different words. A person from one area might use a different word for a tree. This is true for many parts of the language. One group might even use a different word for "to plant."

Even though words change, the language stays strong. It is so special that it was included on a spacecraft called Voyager. This helps people around the world know about it.
