French of France

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

People in France, Andorra, and Monaco speak French. This is the main way they talk. It is often called Standard French. But many types of French exist. There is also French in Canada and Belgium.

How people speak can change by place. In Paris, some sounds are changing. For example, nasal vowels sound different now. In the South, people keep old sounds. They still say words like "enfant" or "pain" the old way. Some people in the South add a small "a" sound at the end of words. They may not hear the difference between some words at the end of a sentence.

In the North, sounds change too. In a place called Jura, the "r" sound is a trill. This means the tongue vibrates. People in Jura also keep long vowel sounds. In Brittany, people also use these long sounds. These sounds help people tell words apart. Each part of France has its own way to speak. This makes the language very rich.
