Many different groups helped make France what it is today. Long ago, people like the Gauls lived there. Later, the Romans came to Gaul. This mix created a new culture.

Other groups like the Franks also settled there. The name "France" comes from the Franks. In the 10th century, Norsemen settled in Normandy. These people became the Normans.

France is also home to many regional groups. Some speak Basque or Breton. Others speak Occitan or Corsican. These are local ways of talking. Today, many people move to France from all over the world. This makes the nation a "melting pot." This means many cultures mix together.
