Spaniards are a group of people from Spain.

Spain has a very long and busy history. Long ago, the Romans ruled the land. They called the area Hispania. The Romans brought a way of talking called Latin. Most languages in Spain grew from this Latin. One is Spanish, also called Castilian. It is the main language used in the whole country.

Other groups use different languages. Some speak Basque, which is a very old language from the area. Others speak Catalan or Galician.

Many different groups lived in Spain over time. The Visigoths ruled for three hundred years. Later, a Muslim group arrived in the year 711. They called their land al-Andalus. This time was a golden age for many. Later, Christian kingdoms grew in the north. By 1492, the Christian kings took the last Muslim land.
