French people are individuals identified with the nation of France. They also form a global sociolinguistic group. This means they share a common connection through the French language, history, and culture. This community is one of the most geographically widespread in the world.

While many live in mainland France, others reside in overseas territories. You can find French-speaking populations in the French West Indies and many other countries. Significant groups exist in Canada, the United States, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Chile, and Uruguay.

Becoming a French citizen is defined by law and the national constitution. The first article of the French Constitution states that citizenship is open to all. This applies regardless of a person's origin, race, or religion. The nation is viewed as a proposition nation. This concept was described by Ernest Renan in 1882. He called it a "plébiscite de tous les jours," or an everyday plebiscite. This idea suggests that being a nation depends on the daily willingness of people to live together.

Modern French society is often described as a "melting pot." The historian Gérard Noiriel used the term "creuset français" to explain this idea. Since the mid-19th century, France has seen high rates of inward migration. Many people arrived from Spain, Portugal, and Italy. Others came from North Africa, the Middle East, and East Asia. Historically, the government encouraged assimilation. This meant immigrants were expected to adopt French cultural norms. Since the mid-1980s, the government has allowed newcomers to retain their distinctive cultures. Now, the focus is on integration rather than total assimilation.

The history of the French people begins with ancient Celtic and Gallic tribes. These people lived in a region known as Gaul.

Between 58 and 51 BCE, the Roman General Julius Caesar conquered most of Gaul. Over the next six centuries, Roman and Gaulish cultures intermingled. This created a hybridized Gallo-Roman culture. The local Latin dialects eventually evolved into Gallo-Romance languages, including French. Even the word "oui" for "yes" has roots in this linguistic history.

After the fall of the Roman Empire, new groups settled in the region. The Franks were a Germanic tribe that moved into northern Gaul. The name "France" actually comes from their territory, called Francia.

Other groups like the Visigoths, Burgundians, and Suebi also settled there. In the 10th century, Norsemen from Denmark and Norway arrived. They settled in a region that became known as Normandy. These people became the Normans. They eventually intermarried with local populations and converted to Christianity.

France is also a patchwork of regional ethnic minorities. These groups have distinct lineages, languages, and cultures.

For example, Bretons live in Brittany, and Occitans live in Occitania. There are also Basques, Catalans, Germans in Alsace, and Corsicans. Many regional languages like Picard, Breton, and Basque are still spoken today. While some are nearly extinct, they are preserved in schools as second languages. Arabic is also widely spoken and is the largest minority language in the 21st century.

Today, the population of France is estimated at about 68.6 million people. While France is an inclusive nation, it faces modern social challenges. There is sometimes tension regarding the success of integration. The 2005 French riots in some impoverished suburbs, or "les quartiers sensibles," highlighted these tensions. Historians note these were social conflicts caused by socioeconomic problems. They were not ethnic conflicts like those seen in the United States or the United Kingdom. Despite these challenges, France remains a global center for culture and healthcare. The World Health Organization has even found that France provides some of the best healthcare in the world.
