Old French

language culture Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Long ago, people in northern France spoke a group of ways to talk. We call this Old French. It was not just one single language. Instead, it was a group of dialects. Dialects are local ways of speaking. People from different areas could still understand each other.

Many different groups used these ways to speak. Some spoke in Normandy. Others spoke in Picardy. Some spoke in Burgundy. The Norman way of speaking even traveled to England. This helped change the English language.

Old French came from an older language called Vulgar Latin. It was also shaped by other groups. The Gaulish people left behind many words. The Franks also had a big effect. They changed how people used sounds and stress. This helped Old French become very special.

Over time, these ways of talking changed. One part became the French we know today. Other parts became new languages like Walloon or Norman. It is amazing to see how one way of speaking can grow into so many!
