It began around the 7th century. A group called the Za ruled from the city of Gao. These kings were very strong. They used riders on horses and camels to hold power. Gao grew into a big center for trade. People traveled long ways to buy gold, salt, and copper. Craftspeople there also made beautiful beads from carnelian.

Religion also changed in Gao. In the 1000s, kings began to follow Islam. This is a religion that many people in that area use. For a while, a new group called the Zaghe also ruled. These rulers married into the old royal family. This helped keep the lines of power connected.

By the late 1200s, Gao changed again. It became part of the Mali Empire. Later, a leader named Sonni Ali helped start the Songhai Empire. Gao was a very important place for many years. It helped shape how other kingdoms worked in West Africa.
