Many great kingdoms lived here for a long time. They grew rich by controlling trade routes. These routes crossed the big desert.

These kingdoms used camels and horses. These animals helped them move fast. They also helped in battles. The kingdoms could not grow into the southern forests. Horses and camels could not survive there.

People in the Sahel did many jobs. Some grew food or raised animals. Others fished or made cloth and metal tools. They even used their own money.

The Ghana Empire was the first big state. It grew wealthy using camels for trade. Later, the Mali Empire rose to power. It was near the Niger River. After Mali, the Songhai Empire became very large. It was the largest state in African history. King Sonni Ali helped it grow fast.

Other states lived in the region too. The Kanem-Bornu state was far to the east. Near them, the Hausa city-states lived. These groups lived together for many years.
