Benjamin Obadiah Iqbal Zephaniah (1958–2023) was a highly influential British writer, musician, and actor. He was a master of dub poetry, a style of spoken-word poetry designed for performance. Zephaniah did not want poetry to remain trapped in quiet academic books. Instead, he transformed poetry readings into high-energy, concert-like events. He often performed with The Benjamin Zephaniah Band to reach audiences who did not typically read books.

His work was celebrated globally, earning him 20 honorary doctorates for his contributions to literature and education. In 2008, The Times recognized him as one of Britain's top 50 post-war writers.

Zephaniah's creative process was deeply rooted in his personal history and social observations. He drew heavily from his Jamaican heritage and his lived experiences with racism and incarceration. His early life in the Handsworth district of Birmingham shaped his perspective. He described Handsworth as the "Jamaican capital of Europe." A pivotal moment in his development was receiving an old manual typewriter as a child. This tool inspired him to become a writer despite facing significant obstacles.

Education was a complex journey for Zephaniah due to his dyslexia. This condition made reading and writing very difficult for him during his school years. He was expelled from Broadway School at age 13 and sent to Boreatton Park approved school. However, he became a self-taught writer who eventually reached the highest levels of academia. He served as a professor of poetry and creative writing at Brunel University London. He also held a year-long residency at Keats House in Hampstead in 2011. His success proved that dyslexia and a non-traditional education did not limit intellectual achievement.

His literary output included several significant collections and novels. His first book of poetry, Pen Rhythm, was published in 1980 through a workers' co-operative. He later wrote The Dread Affair (1985), which critiqued the British legal system. Zephaniah was also a successful novelist for young people. His novel Face (1999) explored facial discrimination and sold approximately 66,000 copies. His second novel, Refugee Boy (2001), focused on a 14-year-old refugee from Ethiopia and Eritrea. This book won the 2002 Portsmouth Book Award in the Longer Novel category and sold 88,000 copies.

Music played a central role in his international rise to fame. In 1982, he released the album Rasta, which featured the Wailers. This album served as a tribute to Nelson Mandela. The record was a massive success, even topping the pop charts in Yugoslavia. This achievement led to a direct connection with Mandela. In 1996, the South African president invited Zephaniah to host the Two Nations Concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Zephaniah released a total of seven original music albums throughout his career.

Zephaniah was also a prominent figure in television and film. He appeared in various BBC programs, including EastEnders and The Bill. Between 2013 and 2022, he had a major role in the drama Peaky Blinders. He played the preacher Jeremiah "Jimmy" Jesus across 14 episodes.

Beyond acting, he was a dedicated activist for various causes. He became a vegan at age 13 to protect animals. He served as an honorary patron for organizations like The Vegan Society and Viva!. He also advocated for animal rights through the Animal Liberation Project.

His political beliefs were defined by a commitment to social justice and anti-imperialism. In 2003, the British government offered him an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE). Zephaniah publicly rejected this honor. He stated that the word "empire" reminded him of slavery and historical brutality. He remained a vocal critic of racism and supported the rights of marginalized communities. His life and work continue to serve as a bridge between different cultures and social classes.
