He is widely celebrated as a poet, author, and essayist. Many people call him the "Father of Swahili" because of his massive impact on the language. He also earned the titles "poet laureate of Swahili" and national poet. His work focused on preserving Tanzanian verse traditions. Beyond literature, he was a dedicated humanist who fought for human dignity. He advocated for freedom and gender equality across the region.

Robert’s writing was deeply influenced by his professional life. He served as a civil servant for the colonial government for many years. From 1926 to 1944, he worked as a customs official in various locations. One of these posts was on Kwale Island in the Pwani Region. Between 1944 and 1946, he worked for the Game Department. He then moved to the Tanga District Office from 1946 to 1952. Finally, he spent time in the Survey Office until 1960. These diverse roles provided the experiences he wove into his prose and poetry.

His intellectual philosophy was built on respect and inclusion. He stood firmly against racial and religious discrimination in Tanzania. This belief in equality was reflected in his own identity. His names represented different traditions: Shaaban is a Muslim name, while Robert is a Christian name. This combination showed his respect for both Muslim and Christian communities. He used his platform to promote the dignity of all mankind. His writing sought to bridge gaps between different groups of people.
