Thomas Mapfumo is a famous singer from Zimbabwe. Many people call him "The Lion of Zimbabwe." He is also known as "Mukanya." This is a praise name from his Shona clan.

His music is very important to his country. He uses his songs to talk about big ideas. He often sings about fairness and social problems. He does not sing many love songs. He says you do not need to sing about that if you have a wife.

Mapfumo created a special style called Chimurenga music. This name comes from the word for a Black Uprising. He wanted to mix old sounds with new ones. He worked with a guitarist named Joshua Dube. They found a way to make the electric guitar sound like the mbira. The mbira is a metal-pronged instrument. It has great spiritual importance to the Shona people.

He also chose to sing in the Shona language. This helped people feel proud of their own culture. This was a big change from singing in English.

Mapfumo was born on July 3, 1945. He was born in a town called Marondera. At that time, the country was called Southern Rhodesia. It was a colony of Great Britain.

As a young boy, he lived a traditional rural life. When he was ten, his family moved to Mbare. This is a township in the city of Harare. There, he heard the traditional music of his people. He joined his first band when he was sixteen years old.

His music sometimes caused trouble with the government. In 1979, the government banned his song "Hokoyo!". This song means "Watch out!"

The leaders even put him in a prison camp. They did not give him any charges for being there. He stayed in prison for three months. People held large protests to help get him released. Later, he played at a big concert with Bob Marley. He even released an album called "Corruption" in 1989. This album was very critical of the leaders.

Because of these problems, Mapfumo lived in the United States for a long time. He lived in Eugene, Oregon, for about twenty years.

He finally returned to Zimbabwe in April 2018. He played a massive show at Glamis Arena in Harare. The concert was called the "Homecoming Bira." It was a very big moment for him. He still travels the world to play his music. He continues to speak up for the people of Zimbabwe through his songs.
