He was born in Durham, England, in 1735. As a young man, he worked as an apprentice for a linen-draper. He was very smart and loved to study difficult subjects. He even taught himself Greek and Hebrew to talk with his friends. Later, he worked as a clerk in the Tower of London. This job gave him extra time to read and study. He was also a wonderful musician who played many instruments.

Sharp became famous for his work to end the slave trade. This was a system where people were treated like property. In 1767, he met a man named Jonathan Strong. Strong was from Barbados and had been treated very badly. Sharp helped him find a job and stay safe. Even when people tried to sue Sharp, he did not give up. He spent two years studying English law to understand rights. He wanted to know why the law allowed such unfair things. This hard work changed his life forever.

In 1769, Sharp wrote a book to attack the idea of slavery. He believed that the laws of nature meant all humans are equal. He argued that no person could be owned by another. His work helped lead to a very important court case. In 1772, a man named James Somerset came to him for help. Somerset was an African man who had run away from his master.

Sharp helped lawyers fight for Somerset's freedom in court. This was a major moment for justice in England.

This case went before a famous judge named Lord Mansfield. The legal battle lasted for six different hearings. Finally, in June 1772, the judge made a big decision. He ruled that slavery had no basis in English law. This meant a master could not forcibly send someone away into slavery. While it did not end all slavery, it was a huge victory. It showed that the law could be used to protect people. Sharp and the lawyers worked together to win this fight.

Sharp continued to work for change for many years. In 1787, he helped start a group to end the slave trade. He worked with Thomas Clarkson and William Wilberforce. Because of their hard work, the Slave Trade Act was passed in 1807.
