He was born on March 11, 1926, in Linden, Alabama. His father was the first African-American to vote in Marengo County. Ralph grew up in a large family with 12 children. He served in the United States Army during World War II. Later, he used the G.I. Bill to attend Alabama State University. While in college, he even led a hunger strike for better food. He became an ordained minister in 1948.

Ralph was a very close friend of Martin Luther King Jr. They worked together to change unfair laws in the South. In 1955, they helped start the Montgomery bus boycott. This happened after Rosa Parks was arrested for her seat on a bus. They worked with others to organize people to stay off the buses. This boycott lasted for 381 days. It ended in December 1956 after a court ruled bus segregation was wrong.

Ralph and King also helped lead the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, or SCLC.

During the civil rights movement, Ralph faced many hard times. His home and his church were both bombed by angry people. He and King were even jailed 17 times together. In 1961, the Freedom Riders came to Montgomery to protest segregated buses. Ralph and King held a large meeting at his church to support them. A large mob surrounded the church and threw rocks at the windows. The Alabama National Guard eventually arrived to help stop the mob.

On April 4, 1968, a very sad thing happened in Memphis, Tennessee. Ralph was in a room at the Lorraine Motel with Dr. King. While Ralph was getting cologne, Dr. King was shot outside on a balcony. Ralph ran to him and held him in his arms. He stayed with King until they reached the hospital. Dr. King passed away later that evening at age 39. After this loss, Ralph became the president of the SCLC. He led the Poor People's Campaign in Washington, D.C., in 1968.

Ralph continued to work for many different causes later in life. In 1969, he protested at NASA to ask for money for the poor. In 1971, he spoke at the United Nations about world peace. He even helped make a peace deal at Wounded Knee in 1973. He later supported the Voting Rights Act in 1982. Ralph died of heart disease on April 17, 1990. His tombstone has the words "I tried" written on it. He spent his whole life trying to make the world better.
