He spent his life working to end segregation. Segregation was a set of unfair laws that kept Black and white people apart. Lewis wanted everyone to be treated with respect and equality. He believed that people could change the world through peaceful actions. This way of acting is called nonviolence. He used this idea to face hard jobs and stay brave.

Lewis learned how to be an activist while he was a student. He joined the Nashville Student Movement to protest at lunch counters. These protests helped change the rules for businesses in downtown Nashville. He also took part in the Freedom Rides in 1961. This was a group of thirteen people who rode buses to challenge unfair seating rules. The riders faced much violence from angry mobs along the way. Lewis was even attacked in South Carolina and later in Alabama.

His journey began in a very different world in Alabama. He was born on February 21, 1940, near the town of Troy. His parents were sharecroppers, which means they worked on farms. Lewis grew up in a home with very few books. He went to a small school called a Rosenwald School. As a boy, he loved to read and even preached to chickens. He learned about the world by listening to the radio and meeting leaders.

Lewis became a very important leader during the 1960s. In 1963, he became the chairman of a group called SNCC. He was also one of the "Big Six" leaders of the March on Washington. On that day, he spoke to a huge crowd of people. He even spoke before Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous speech. In 1965, he led a march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma. During this march, police attacked the people walking for their rights.

He served in the House for 17 terms until he died in 2020. Because he served for so long, he was a very respected leader. In 2011, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
