He was born on January 18, 1937, in the city of Derry. He grew up in a working-class Catholic family. His father, Samuel, was a former soldier and worked in a shipyard. His mother, Annie, worked as a seamstress. John was the oldest of seven children. He was one of the first people to benefit from a new education law in 1947. This law helped many children go to secondary schools through scholarships. He attended St. Columb's College and later St. Patrick's College in Maynooth.

Before he became a famous leader, John worked with money and communities. In 1960, when he was 23, he helped start the Derry Credit Union. This was the first cooperative community bank in Northern Ireland. Credit unions let working people pool their money together. This allowed them to borrow money at low costs. It was a much better choice than using pawn shops. John became the youngest President of the Irish League of Credit Unions. He served in that role until 1968. He said he was most proud of this work in his life.

As he grew older, John noticed many unfair things in his home city. He saw that housing and jobs were not equal for everyone. He noticed that the way city lines were drawn, called gerrymandering, helped one group stay in power. This made it hard for his community to have a voice. In 1963, he even wrote a script for a television documentary about Derry. He wanted to show the world the problems people faced there. He believed that different groups in the North must learn to work together. He did not want people to use violence to solve their problems.

John eventually entered formal politics to make real changes. In 1969, he was elected to represent the Foyle area. In August 1970, he helped form a new political party called the SDLP. This stands for the Social Democratic and Labour Party. He served as the deputy leader of this group. He worked in many different parliaments over the years. He served in the Parliament of Northern Ireland and the Northern Ireland Assembly. He also served in the European Parliament and the United Kingdom Parliament. He spent his life trying to find a way for different people to live in peace.

His hard work led to a very important moment for peace. The Norwegian Nobel Committee named him an architect of the Good Friday Agreement. This was a major deal that helped bring peace to the region. Because of this great work, he won the Nobel Peace Prize.
