He was born in 1937 in a city called Derry. His family worked hard to support their seven children.

Early in his life, John helped start credit unions. These were special banks for working people. They let people save money and borrow it at low costs. John was very proud of this work. He felt it did much good for people.

Later, John entered politics to fight for fairness. He saw that some people were treated poorly in his city. He wanted to fix problems like housing and jobs. He helped form a group called the SDLP. This group wanted a fair society for everyone.

John worked hard to bring peace to his land. He wanted different groups to talk and work together. He did not want people to use violence. Because of his work, he helped make the Good Friday Agreement.
