This conflict was called the Troubles. It began in the late 1960s. People had different ideas about who should rule the land. Some wanted to stay with Great Britain. Others wanted to join the Republic of Ireland. This fighting lasted for over 30 years. More than 3,500 people died during this time.

Leaders worked hard to find peace. They held many talks and made big plans. On April 10, 1998, they signed the Good Friday Agreement.

This is done through the Northern Ireland Assembly. The plan also helped people work together across borders. It made new groups to help Northern Ireland and Ireland talk. Voters in both places said yes to the plan in May 1998. This helped bring more peace to the area.
