On the Irish side, Arthur Griffith and Michael Collins led the talks.

The treaty made big changes. Ireland would become the Irish Free State. It would rule itself like Canada.

However, Northern Ireland could choose to stay out of this new state. Northern Ireland did choose to stay out.

There were also hard rules. Irish leaders had to swear loyalty to the King. Britain would also keep control of some sea ports. The treaty was signed late at night on December 6, 1921. This plan helped end the war. But it also caused a split among Irish people. This split led to a civil war. The side that liked the treaty won that war.
