Many people in Ireland had different ideas about this plan. Some thought it was a good step toward freedom. Others felt it did not go far enough. This agreement changed the history of the whole region.

The treaty worked by setting new rules for the country.

It created the Irish Free State as a self-governing land. This meant Ireland could rule itself like Canada or Australia.

However, the King would still be the Head of State. Irish leaders had to take an oath of loyalty to King George V. The treaty also said Britain would keep some sea ports. Northern Ireland was given a choice to stay out of the new state.

Leaders worked for many months to make this deal.

Negotiators met in London to discuss the many hard details. They even had private talks to solve difficult problems. Some meetings were very formal and held in large rooms. Other talks were small and held between just a few people. These meetings were a way to avoid more fighting.

Many famous people were part of these big talks.

On the Irish side, Arthur Griffith and Michael Collins led the group. Other Irish members included Robert Barton and Eamonn Duggan.

The treaty was finally signed on December 6, 1921. It was signed very late at night in London.

This treaty is a key part of how modern Ireland began.

It led to the Irish Free State in December 1922. But the treaty also caused a big split in Ireland. This split led to a hard time called the Irish Civil War. The side that supported the treaty eventually won that war. Today, people still study these events to understand Irish history. It shows how difficult it can be to make peace.
