The Good Friday Agreement was a very important peace plan. It was signed on April 10, 1998, in Belfast. This day is also known as Good Friday. The agreement helped end most of the violence in Northern Ireland. This conflict was called the Troubles. It had lasted since the late 1960s.

The fighting was between different groups of people. Some wanted Northern Ireland to stay with Great Britain. Others wanted it to join the Republic of Ireland. Over 30 years of fighting caused more than 3,500 deaths.

The agreement worked by creating two main parts. The first part was a Multi-Party Agreement. This was signed by most political groups in Northern Ireland. The second part was the British-Irish Agreement. This was a deal between the British and Irish governments.

The plan used three different paths, or strands, to organize things. Strand 1 focused on how Northern Ireland would govern itself. Strand 2 helped Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland work together. Strand 3 helped the United Kingdom and Ireland work together.

Many leaders worked for years to make this happen. George J. Mitchell was a special envoy from the United States. He chaired the long talks. Tony Blair led the United Kingdom at this time. Bertie Ahern led the Republic of Ireland. Mo Mowlam was the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland.

The talks were very hard and required many compromises. Some people even used "constructive ambiguity." This means they used words that could be understood in different ways. This helped everyone agree on the plan even when they disagreed on details.

The agreement changed how the land was ruled. It said that most people in Northern Ireland wanted to stay with Britain. It also said many others wanted a united Ireland. Both views were seen as fair and right.

The plan created the Northern Ireland Assembly to share power. This is a group of leaders who make decisions together. It also created the North-South Ministerial Council. This group helps leaders from both sides talk about shared needs. In May 1998, voters in both places held referendums. They voted to approve the plan.

Today, the agreement still guides how people live together. It protects the rights of people to be British or Irish. People can even choose to be both.

The agreement also focused on making sure the police were fair to everyone. It helped groups stop using weapons and move toward peace. This process helped build a new system of government. It showed that even after many years of fighting, leaders can find a way to work together. This peace process was a major step for the whole island.
