About 1,903,175 people lived there during the 2021 census. This is around 3% of the total population of the UK. It also makes up about 27% of the people on the whole island of Ireland. The area is made of six northeastern counties.

Governance in the region works in a special way. The Northern Ireland Assembly was set up by the Northern Ireland Act 1998. This group handles many local policy matters. Other important areas are kept for the UK Government to manage. The government of Northern Ireland works with the government of Ireland in several areas. This happens under the rules of the Good Friday Agreement.

The history of this place involves many different groups. Long ago, the land was home to Irish-speaking Gaels. In 1169, Anglo-Norman forces from the English crown invaded the island.

Later, English-speaking Protestant settlers arrived during the Plantation of Ulster. This created a lasting community with strong ties to Britain. These groups often had different views on how the land should be ruled. Some people wanted to remain part of the United Kingdom. Others wanted a united and independent Ireland.

Conflict occurred between these groups for many years. One very difficult time was called The Troubles. This was a thirty-year conflict that began in the late 1960s. It involved different groups and state forces. The fighting claimed over 3,500 lives and injured 50,000 others.

The economy also changed during these years. It was once very industrial but then declined during the unrest. Since the late 1990s, the economy has grown significantly. Unemployment was as high as 17.2% in 1986, but it fell below 10% in the 2010s.

Today, Northern Ireland has many links to other places. It shares the culture of both Ireland and the United Kingdom.
