The Irish Civil War was a hard conflict between Irish people. It lasted from June 28, 1922, to May 24, 1923. This war happened right after the Irish War of Independence ended.

The fight started because of a deal called the Anglo-Irish Treaty. This treaty helped create the Irish Free State. This new state was independent from the United Kingdom. However, it was still part of the British Empire. This meant the British monarch was still the head of state. Many people felt this was not enough freedom.

The war was fought between two main groups. One group was the Provisional Government of Ireland. They supported the terms of the new treaty. The other group was the Anti-Treaty IRA. They believed the treaty was a betrayal of the Irish Republic.

Many fighters on both sides were once close friends. They had fought together against the British just a year before. This made the disagreement very personal and bitter. Some leaders felt they had to obey orders even if they disagreed. Michael Collins said he felt he had signed his death warrant.

Events moved quickly during the first months of the war. In April 1922, Anti-Treaty fighters occupied the Four Courts in Dublin. This building is a famous place in the center of the city.

For a while, there was a tense stand-off there. The Provisional Government eventually took control of Dublin by early July. Then, the pro-treaty National Army moved against other areas. They focused on strongholds in the south and west. This area was often called the 'Munster Republic.' By late August, the National Army had captured all the big cities.

Specific tools and leaders helped shape how the war went. The National Army had a big advantage in weapons. The British government gave them items like artillery and armored cars.

Éamon de Valera was a key leader for the anti-treaty side. He had argued against the treaty before it was signed. After the war, the fighting changed into a guerrilla phase. This means small groups used quick attacks instead of big battles. This phase lasted for another ten months. Finally, the IRA leaders told their units to "dump arms." This order effectively ended the conflict in May 1923.

The war left a deep mark on Irish society. It divided people and caused sadness for many generations. Even today, you can see the history in Irish politics. The three largest political parties in Ireland came from this war. Fine Gael grew from the supporters of the treaty. Fianna Fáil was formed by Éamon de Valera from the anti-treaty side. Sinn Féin was formed by a smaller group of republicans.
