The Easter Rising was a major event in Irish history. It was an armed rebellion that took place in April 1916. This happened during Easter Week in Dublin, Ireland. The rebels wanted to end British rule in Ireland. Their goal was to create an independent Irish Republic. This was a very important moment for people wanting change. It was the first big conflict of the Irish revolutionary period.

The Rising worked through a plan made by a small group. A seven-man Military Council led the way. They kept their plans secret from the British authorities. They also kept plans secret from some of their own members. This was to make sure the Rising could actually happen. On Easter Monday, April 24, 1916, the action began. Groups like the Irish Volunteers and the Irish Citizen Army moved into the city. They took over important buildings to use as bases.

Planning for this event took a long time. Leaders like Tom Clarke and Seán Mac Diarmada were in charge of the plans. They wanted to use the First World War as a chance for change. They even tried to get help and weapons from Germany. Patrick Pearse and James Connolly were key leaders who joined forces. They led different groups of people into the streets of Dublin. The fighting lasted for six days before a surrender was made.

Many people were involved in the fighting and its results. There were 485 people killed during the Rising. This included 260 civilians and 143 British military and police members. There were also 82 Irish rebels who died. The British Army used artillery and a gunboat against the rebels. This caused many fires and left parts of central Dublin in ruins. About 3,500 people were taken as prisoners by the British.

The Rising changed how people in Ireland felt about their government. After the fight, the British executed sixteen of the rebel leaders. This choice made many people support Irish independence even more. In the 1918 general election, a group called Sinn Féin won 73 seats. This helped the move toward Ireland becoming its own country. The event showed that people were ready for a new way to rule.
