For a long time, people in Ireland wanted to rule themselves. They did not want to be part of the United Kingdom. In April 1916, a group of people started a fight for freedom. This event is called the Easter Rising.

On Easter Monday, rebels took over important buildings in Dublin. They used the General Post Office as a main base.

Leaders like Patrick Pearse and James Connolly led the groups. They wanted to make an independent Irish Republic.

The British Army came to stop them. They used big guns and many soldiers. The fighting lasted for six days. It was very hard on the city. Many buildings were ruined by fires and shells.

Sadly, 485 people died in the fight.

After the fighting, the British leaders executed sixteen of the rebels. This made many Irish people very angry. Instead of stopping the movement, it helped more people support independence. In the next election, a group called Sinn Féin won many seats. This helped Ireland move toward being its own country.
