In the early 1900s, Ireland was part of the United Kingdom. Many Irish people wanted to rule themselves. This was called Home Rule. In 1912, a new law for Home Rule was introduced. But some people in Ulster did not want it. They formed a group called the Ulster Volunteers to stop it. Other Irish people formed the Irish Volunteers to help.

In 1916, a group tried to take control during the Easter Rising. This was a fight in Dublin. The attempt failed. Many leaders were killed by the British. This made more people want a republic. In 1918, many people voted for a party called Sinn Féin. They wanted full independence.

Fighting broke out between 1919 and 1921. This was the Irish War of Independence. In 1921, a treaty was signed. It created the Irish Free State. This new land could rule itself. However, the island was split. Northern Ireland stayed in the United Kingdom. The rest of the land became the Free State. This led to a civil war from 1922 to 1923.
