Pearse was born in Dublin in 1879. His father, James, was a stonemason who ran a successful business. This allowed the Pearse family to live a comfortable middle-class life. Patrick grew up with his brother Willie and two sisters. His mother, Margaret, came from a family that spoke the Irish language. This helped Patrick fall in love with Irish culture very early in his life.

Pearse believed that a nation's language was part of its soul. He thought the school system at the time did not value Irish enough. To fix this, he wanted to create a new way to learn.

He also helped start a school for girls called Scoil Íde. He used his school to teach children both English and Irish.

As Pearse grew older, he became very involved in politics. He joined a group called the Gaelic League when he was only 16. In 1903, he became the editor of their newspaper.
