He grew up on a farm near the city of Barcelona. As a young man, he worked as a train conductor. He used his job to help people with new political ideas. Later, he moved to Paris, France, for sixteen years. In Paris, he met many people who shared his radical ideas about society. He also learned about a special way to teach children without using strict rules.

In 1901, Ferrer returned to Spain to start his own school. He used a large inheritance of money to open the Barcelona Modern School. This school was very different from others at that time. Most Spanish schools were run by the church and taught religious lessons. Ferrer wanted a school that focused on reason and science instead. He did not want students to just memorize facts from books. He believed children should learn by doing things in the real world.

Learning at the Modern School was a hands-on adventure. Students did not have to take exams or receive grades. Ferrer thought that grades and tests could be hurtful to a child's spirit. There were also no prizes or punishments used in his classrooms. Instead, the school encouraged children to explore their own interests. Students went on trips to visit local museums, parks, and even factories. They wanted to see how things worked with their own eyes. The school even had its own printing press to make textbooks.

However, the leaders of the Spanish government and the church were worried. They thought the school's ideas were dangerous to the country. In 1906, the government even forced the school to close for a while. Later, in 1909, Ferrer was arrested after a week of unrest in Barcelona. He was accused of being part of a revolt, but many people believed he was innocent. The court case was very controversial, and Ferrer was eventually executed.

News of his death spread quickly across the entire world. People in many different countries were very upset by what happened. They held large protests to show their support for his ideas.

Because of this, a huge movement began to build new schools. These schools were named after him and followed his way of teaching. Modern schools began to open in places like the United States, Brazil, and Asia. Ferrer's dream of a different kind of education lived on through these many new places.
