He grew up on a farm near Barcelona. Later, he lived in Paris for many years. In Paris, he studied different ways to teach. He wanted to make a school for all children. He used money he inherited to start it.

In 1901, he opened the Modern School in Barcelona. This school was very different. Most schools back then were run by the church. Ferrer's school was not religious. He did not use tests or grades. He did not use prizes or punishments. Instead, he wanted kids to learn by doing. Students visited museums and parks to see things for themselves. They also read books about science and nature.

Some leaders in the Spanish government did not like his school. They thought his ideas were dangerous. In 1909, Ferrer was arrested after a week of unrest in the city. A court found him guilty, but many people thought he was innocent. He was executed that same year.
