He was born in Drumcondra, Dublin, on September 12, 1951. He was the youngest of five children in his family. His parents, Con and Julia, came from farming families in County Cork. His father worked as a farm manager at All Hallows College. Bertie went to several schools in Dublin before going to college. He later worked in the accounts office at the Mater Hospital. He loves watching Dublin GAA matches at Croke Park. He also enjoys watching Manchester United play soccer and rugby matches.

Bertie's journey into politics started when he was quite young. In 1965, he helped a political group called Fianna Fáil by hanging posters. He even climbed lamp posts to get the job done! He officially joined the Fianna Fáil party when he was only 17 years old. In 1977, he was elected to the Dáil, which is the Irish parliament. He became a Teachta Dála, or TD, for the Dublin Finglas area. Over the years, he held many different roles in the government. He served as the Lord Mayor of Dublin from 1986 to 1987. He also worked as the Minister for Labour and the Minister for Finance.

Bertie rose through the ranks to lead his party. In 1994, he was elected as the leader of Fianna Fáil. He worked hard to form a government with other parties. This was not always easy, as some partners left the government. However, in the 1997 general election, Bertie became very popular. He led his party to win many seats in the election. On June 26, 1997, at age 45, he became the Taoiseach. A Taoiseach is the leader of the Irish government. He was the youngest person to hold this role in a long time.

His time as leader lasted from 1997 until 2008. This made him the second-longest serving Taoiseach in Irish history. He led three different coalition governments during his time in office.

Even successful leaders can face very difficult times. During his time in office, a group called the Mahon Tribunal began an investigation. The tribunal looked into payments that Bertie had received from businessmen. It found that he had not explained where some of the money came from. Because of these findings, Bertie decided to resign as Taoiseach on May 6, 2008.

After he left, Brian Cowen became the new leader. Bertie left the Fianna Fáil party for a while after this. However, the party later gave him the choice to return. He officially rejoined the Fianna Fáil party in February 2023.
