Bartholomew Patrick "Bertie" Ahern is a prominent Irish politician.
Ahern was born on September 12, 1951, in Drumcondra, Dublin. He was the youngest of five children. His parents, Con and Julia, were from farming families in County Cork. His father, Con, had been a militant Irish Republican and fought in the Irish Civil War. Ahern attended St. Patrick's National School and St. Aidan's Christian Brothers. He later studied at the College of Commerce in Rathmines. Before entering politics, he worked in the accounts department of the Mater Hospital in Dublin. Outside of his professional life, he is a dedicated sports fan.
His political journey began with small tasks in 1965. He helped a Fianna Fáil campaign by hanging posters on lamp posts. During this time, he met Charles Haughey, who would become his political mentor. Ahern joined the Fianna Fáil party at age 17. He was first elected to the Dáil in the 1977 general election. He represented the Dublin Finglas constituency. As he gained experience, he held various roles. He served as Assistant-Government Chief Whip and later as Government Chief Whip. In 1986, he served as the Lord Mayor of Dublin, where he organized the Dublin Millennium festival.
Ahern moved into the cabinet during the late 1980s. As Minister for Labour, he helped stimulate the Irish economy. He negotiated the Programme for National Recovery. This was a national wage agreement between employers and unions. This approach became known as the "Irish model" in Europe. In 1991, he was appointed Minister for Finance. He held this position during a time of significant political change. He remained in the cabinet even when the government shifted. He was a key figure in many political negotiations during this era.
In 1994, Ahern was elected leader of Fianna Fáil. This happened after the previous leader, Albert Reynolds, resigned. Ahern initially became the Leader of the Opposition. However, he successfully formed a coalition government in 1997.

His leadership faced challenges regarding political ethics. The Mahon Tribunal was established to investigate various issues. This tribunal looked into potentially corrupt payments made to politicians. In 2006, details emerged regarding financial support Ahern received in 1993 and 1994. The tribunal investigated payments from various businessmen. In 2012, the tribunal's final report stated that Ahern failed to truthfully explain the source of some money. It rejected his explanation of these funds as "dig-outs." These investigations created significant pressure on his leadership.
Ahern resigned as Taoiseach on May 6, 2008. He was succeeded by Brian Cowen. His resignation followed the revelations made by the Mahon Tribunal. Fianna Fáil had proposed to expel politicians who were censured by the tribunal. Ahern chose to resign his party membership before that motion could happen. He eventually rejoined the Fianna Fáil party in February 2023. His career remains a central part of studying Irish political history and the development of the Irish economy.
