He grew up in the Ballymurphy district. His family had a long history in Irish republicanism. His grandfather was a member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood. His father, Gerry Adams Sr., also joined the IRA when he was 16. Even his great-grandfather was involved in political movements long ago. This family background shaped his early life and his later choices.

In the late 1960s, Adams became involved in a civil rights campaign. This movement fought for fairness in Northern Ireland. During this time, there was a lot of tension and violence. Adams joined Sinn Féin and Fianna Éireann during these years. He was captured by British soldiers in March 1972. He was held in prison several times during the 1970s. Some people say he was a leader in the IRA. Adams has always denied being a member of that group.

Later, Adams helped lead his party toward a new way of working. He helped change the policy of Sinn Féin. For a long time, the party did not take seats in certain parliaments. In 1986, he convinced the party to change this rule. He also helped lead the peace process in Northern Ireland. He held talks with leaders like John Hume. He also spoke with the Irish and British governments. In 1998, his party began taking seats in the Northern Ireland Assembly.
