Throughout his career, he held several major elected offices. He was the Member of Parliament for Belfast West from 1983 to 1992 and again from 1997 to 2011. He also served as a Teachta Dála for Louth between 2011 and 2020. Additionally, he was a Member of the Northern Ireland Legislative Assembly. Adams is a central figure in the modern history of Irish politics.

Adams was born on October 6, 1948, in the Ballymurphy district of Belfast. He grew up in a family with deep roots in Irish republicanism.

His grandfather was a member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood. His father, Gerry Adams Sr., joined the IRA at age 16 and was later imprisoned. His maternal great-grandfather, Michael Hannaway, was also involved in the Irish Republican Brotherhood. This family history of activism influenced his early life and political views.

In the late 1960s, Adams joined the civil rights movement in Northern Ireland. This movement sought fairness for nationalist communities. During this period, the region experienced significant violence and social unrest. Adams joined Sinn Féin and Fianna Éireann during this time. In March 1972, he was captured by British soldiers and interned. Internment is the practice of holding people in custody without a trial. He was later imprisoned in the HM Prison Maze after an escape attempt.

There is significant historical debate regarding Adams's role in the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA). While Adams has consistently denied being a member of the organization, many others have disagreed. Journalists and historians have identified him as part of the IRA leadership. For example, several former IRA members named him as a member. Academics generally agree that he held several command positions in the 1970s. He is believed to have been an officer for the Belfast Brigade. Some sources also suggest he was a member of the IRA Army Council from 1977 to 2005.

Adams played a major role in changing the direction of Sinn Féin. Historically, the party practiced abstentionism. This meant they refused to take seats in certain parliaments, such as the UK Parliament or the Oireachtas in the Republic of Ireland. In 1986, Adams convinced the party to end its policy of abstentionism toward the Oireachtas.

In 1998, Sinn Féin also began taking seats in the Northern Ireland Assembly. These shifts moved the party toward constitutional politics.

Adams was a key figure in the Northern Ireland peace process. He entered into discussions with the Social Democratic and Labour Party leader, John Hume. He also participated in talks with the Irish and British governments. This period of negotiation eventually led to major political changes. In 2005, the Provisional IRA announced that its armed campaign was over. The group stated it was now exclusively committed to peaceful politics. This marked a massive transition from conflict to political engagement.

In 2014, Adams was questioned by the Police Service of Northern Ireland. This was related to the 1972 abduction and murder of Jean McConville. He was held for four days but was released without charge. The Public Prosecution Service later stated there was insufficient evidence to charge him. Despite these legal challenges, Adams remained a prominent political figure until his retirement. He announced in 2017 that he would step down as leader.
