Two young men named Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb were the ones involved. They were both students at the University of Chicago. Leopold was 19 years old, and Loeb was 18 years old. They were both very smart and came from wealthy families. They believed their high intelligence made them special. They wanted to prove they could commit a "perfect crime." This meant they wanted to do something bad without getting caught.

To do this, they planned a kidnapping and a murder.

They chose a 14-year-old boy named Bobby Franks as their victim. Bobby was a neighbor of Loeb and lived in the Kenwood area. The two men spent seven months planning every single step. They even came up with a plan to ask for ransom money. They thought this would hide their real reason for the crime. On May 21, 1924, they used a rented car to pick up Bobby. They told him they wanted to talk about a tennis racket.

After the crime, the men tried to hide what they did. They sent a ransom note to the Franks family.

They used a typewriter that they had stolen from a house. However, the police found important clues during their work. They found a pair of eyeglasses near where Bobby was found. These glasses had a very unusual hinge. Only three people in Chicago had bought that specific type of hinge. One of those people was Nathan Leopold. The police also found the stolen typewriter in a lagoon.

Both men were caught and had to go to court.

Their families hired a famous lawyer named Clarence Darrow to help them. Darrow gave a very long speech during the sentencing hearing. He spoke for eight hours about the law. He argued that the death penalty was not the right way to seek justice. The judge decided to sentence both men to life in prison. They were also given an extra 99 years of prison time. This was a very big deal in the news at that time.

Life in prison was very different for the two men.

Richard Loeb was killed by another prisoner in 1936. Nathan Leopold lived much longer in prison. He was finally released on parole in 1958.

After he was released, Leopold worked with birds. He helped the population of the Puerto Rican Parrot. This case is still studied today because of how it changed ideas about justice. It has also inspired many dramatic stories and movies.
