Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti were two Italian immigrants living in the United States.

Sacco worked as a shoemaker and a night watchman. Vanzetti worked as a fishmonger. Both men were also anarchists. Anarchists are people who want to change how governments work.

They both moved to America in 1908. Many people at the time viewed Italian anarchists with suspicion. The government even listed them as dangerous enemies. This tension would play a big role in their later story.

In April 1920, a robbery happened in Braintree, Massachusetts.

Two men, Alessandro Berardelli and Frederick Parmenter, were killed during the crime. The robbers took money from the Slater and Morrill Shoe Company. Police found several bullets at the scene. Some of these bullets were from a .32 caliber Savage Model 1907 pistol.

The police believed the robbery was meant to fund anarchist activities. Soon after, they arrested Sacco and Vanzetti.

The trial began in 1921.

After a few hours of talking, the jury found both men guilty of murder. The judge sentenced them to death. Many people believed the verdict was not fair. They thought the jury was biased against immigrants and radicals. People argued that the men were being punished for their ideas. A defense committee was formed to help them with many appeals. These appeals looked at new evidence and conflicting witness stories.

By 1926, the case became famous all over the world.

People held huge protests in many major cities. These protests happened in North America and Europe. They even occurred in far places like Tokyo, Sydney, and Buenos Aires. Famous writers and artists asked for the men to be released. Even the Italian leader Benito Mussolini thought they were innocent. Despite all this, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court denied their appeals. The men were executed in the electric chair on August 23, 1927.

The story of Sacco and Vanzetti did not end with their deaths.

Many people continued to investigate the case for decades. In 1961, a test on a pistol suggested it might have been used in the crime. However, many people still questioned if that evidence was reliable. In 1977, the Governor of Massachusetts, Michael Dukakis, spoke about the case. He said the men had been unfairly tried and convicted. He wanted to remove the disgrace from their names. This shows how much people still care about justice today.
