Gaetano Bresci was an Italian man who lived a life shaped by hard work and strong beliefs.

He was born in Prato, Italy, in 1869 to a family of farmers. His parents grew grapes, olives, and wheat on their small land. However, things changed when Italy began importing cheap grain from the United States. This made prices fall and left his family in poverty. To help them, Gaetano began working as a weaver when he was only 11 years old. He eventually became a skilled silk weaver by age 15. His difficult time at work made him feel that the system was unfair. This led him to join the anarchist movement, a group that wanted to change how society was run.

In 1897, Bresci moved to the United States to find a better life. He lived in Hoboken, New Jersey, and married a woman named Sophie Kneiland. They had two daughters, Madeleine and Gaetanina. Bresci worked as a silk weaver in Paterson, New Jersey, to support his family. He also became very active in local groups and helped fund a newspaper called La Questione Sociale. He even saved the life of a famous anarchist named Errico Malatesta once. While he liked the freedom in America, he also faced many unfair feelings toward Italian immigrants. He wrote to his brother about how some people in America called Italians names.

Everything changed when Bresci heard news about a tragedy in Italy. In 1898, the Italian army killed many people during a protest in Milan. These people were protesting because the price of bread was too high. Bresci blamed King Umberto I for this event. He believed the king was responsible for the violence.

To take action, Bresci used money he had lent to a newspaper to buy a revolver. He also bought a one-way ticket back to Europe. He told his wife he was only going back to handle his parents' estate. He arrived in Italy in 1900 and began planning his next move.

Bresci traveled to Monza, where he learned the king would attend a gymnastics event.

On July 29, 1900, he waited near the stadium. He spent his day walking around and even eating ice cream. That evening, the king arrived in a car to give out medals. There were not many police officers there to watch the crowd. As the king's car passed, Bresci stepped forward and shot him several times. The crowd was very angry and tried to attack Bresci, but a marshal stopped them. Bresci did not fight back when he was arrested. He said he had killed a principle rather than just a man.

After the event, Bresci was tried and sentenced to life in prison.

The government thought he might have worked with a larger group, but they found no proof. He was eventually sent to a remote place called Santo Stefano Island. There, he lived in a small cell all by himself. He was not allowed to see visitors and could only exercise for one hour a day. Within a year, he was found dead in his cell. Some people in the anarchist movement saw him as a martyr. His actions even inspired Leon Czolgosz to assassinate U.S. President William McKinley later on.
