During his life, Italy was not one single country. Instead, it was made of many small, separate states. Many of these lands were ruled by foreign powers. Mazzini wanted to change this by creating one unified nation. He dreamed of a free and independent republic for all Italians. Because of his strong ideas, people called him the "Prophet of Italian Nationalism."

Mazzini worked in many different ways to reach his goals. He was a lawyer, a journalist, and a writer. He also used secret groups to organize people. One famous group he started was called Young Italy.

This group had a very clear motto. They wanted a nation that was "One, free, independent, republican nation." He believed that people rising up together could change their future. He even started a group called Young Europe to help other nations gain liberty.

Mazzini's journey began in the city of Genoa.

He was born there on June 22, 1805. His father was a university professor who cared about politics. Mazzini was a very bright student from a young age. He went to university when he was only 14 years old. He graduated with a law degree in 1826. After that, he worked as a lawyer for people who had very little money.

His work for Italian freedom was often very difficult. In 1831, he had to leave Italy and live in exile.

Mazzini's ideas changed the world long after he was gone. His work helped lead to the unification of Italy.
