Hindutva is a political idea used in India. It focuses on Hindu nationalism. This means people want the nation to follow Hindu values.

Some people say it is a way to make Hindu culture the leader of the country. Others call it a type of right-wing extremism. Some scholars even say it is similar to fascism. This is a big topic that people in India still discuss today.

This idea works by grouping people together through shared traits. Vinayak Damodar Savarkar was the main person who wrote about it. He said Hindutva was about three main things. These were a common nation, a common race, and a common culture.

He believed these things would hold a nation together. He wanted to build a strong nation based on these shared roots.

Savarkar began writing his ideas in the early 1920s. He wrote a famous book in 1923 called Essentials of Hindutva. Before him, the word Hindutva was used in different ways. In the late 1890s, a man named Chandranath Basu used it to describe Hindu culture. Later, Savarkar gave the word a much wider political meaning. He wanted to define a specific identity for the people of India.

There are many important names and groups tied to this movement. The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, or RSS, is a major group that uses these ideas. Another group is the Vishva Hindu Parishad, or VHP. The current ruling party in India is the Bharatiya Janata Party, or BJP. These groups are often called the Sangh Parivar.

They all use Hindutva to shape their political goals.

This topic is linked to how laws work in India. The Supreme Court of India has looked at Hindutva many times. In 1966, the court said that Hinduism is very hard to define. They said it is more like a "way of life" than just a religion. This decision has caused many debates. Some people worry these ideas divide people. Others believe they help define the nation's character.
