The group has a huge influence on many parts of Indian life. It is currently the largest organization of its kind in the world.

Members of the RSS follow a specific way of life to build strength.

They use training to teach discipline and character. In the past, volunteers wore khaki shirts and shorts. They also wore black forage caps. Members practiced with tools like bamboo staffs, swords, and javelins. They use a saffron flag as their symbol. This flag comes from the history of a king named Shivaji. They also hold weekly sessions to learn about Hindu history and heroes.

A doctor named K. B. Hedgewar started the RSS in 1925.

He lived in the city of Nagpur. Hedgewar wanted to unite the Hindu community. He believed that Hindus were too divided to be strong. He was influenced by the ideas of a man named V. D. Savarkar. Hedgewar also worked with other leaders like B. S. Moonje. He wanted to create a group based on Indian traditions. He spent much of his life building many local branches.

The history of the RSS has many difficult moments.

During the time when Britain ruled India, the RSS did not join the movement for independence. The group was banned by the Indian government three different times. One ban happened in 1948 after Nathuram Godse killed Mahatma Gandhi. The group was banned again during the Emergency from 1975 to 1977. A third ban happened after the destruction of the Babri Masjid in 1992. Some people criticize the group for being extreme or unfair to minorities.

Today, the RSS continues to work in many different ways.

It is not just about politics or training. The group has many branches that run schools and charities. They also help people during hard times like natural disasters. For example, they have helped with relief work after earthquakes and floods.
