Its official symbol is the lotus flower. The lotus is the national flower of India. In Hinduism, the lotus represents peace and prosperity. The party also uses the color saffron very often. Saffron is a color with great meaning in Hindu culture. Many of their flags are saffron with a green stripe. This color scheme helps the party show its nationalist ideas. It also helps them reach people who support Hindu traditions.

The history of the BJP started a long time ago.

In 1951, a man named Shyama Prasad Mukherjee founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh. This group was the early version of the BJP. Later, the Jana Sangh joined other groups to form the Janata Party. The Janata Party won a big election in 1977. However, that group dissolved in 1980. After that, members of the old Jana Sangh met to form the modern BJP. Atal Bihari Vajpayee served as the party's first president.

The BJP grew much stronger over the following years.

In the 1984 election, the party was very small. It won only two seats in the national Parliament. Things changed during the Ram Janmabhoomi movement in the 1990s. Leader Lal Krishna Advani led a chariot journey called a Rath Yatra. This helped the party gain more support. By 1996, the BJP became the largest party in Parliament. Atal Bihari Vajpayee led the government for a short time then. Later, his coalition led a full term in office.

In recent years, the BJP has reached new heights.
