Princip went to school to learn new things. He was a very good student in his early years. He moved to the city of Sarajevo to study more.
As he grew up, Princip became interested in politics. He joined a secret group called Young Bosnia.
This group wanted Bosnia to be free from Austria-Hungary. They wanted all South Slav people to live together. Princip met with other students to talk about these ideas. He wanted his people to have their own nation. He even tried to join the army in Serbia. The army said no because he was too small. This hard time made him want to take action.
In 1914, Princip and his friends made a plan. They worked with a group called the Black Hand.
This group gave them weapons and training. On June 28, 1914, they met the royal visitors in Sarajevo.

Gavrilo Princip was a Bosnian Serb student who changed the course of world history.
In June 1914, he assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary. He also killed the Archduke's wife, Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg. This event took place in Sarajevo, the capital of Austrian-occupied Bosnia. His actions triggered the July Crisis, a rapid series of political events. This crisis led directly to the outbreak of World War I. Today, historians study Princip to understand how individual actions can spark global conflict.
Princip was born in a remote hamlet called Obljaj in western Bosnia.
He was the second of nine children born to Petar and Marija Princip. His family were poor Serbian Orthodox Christian farmers. They were part of a class known as kmetovi, or serfs. These peasants often faced oppression from Muslim landlords. To support his family, Petar Princip worked as a mail carrier across the mountains. Despite his difficult upbringing, Princip was a successful student. He eventually moved to Sarajevo to attend the Merchants' School and later the Sarajevo Gymnasium.
During his school years, Princip became deeply involved in nationalist politics.
In 1911, he joined a secret society called Young Bosnia. This group wanted to free Bosnia from Austrian rule. They also aimed to unify the South Slavs into one nation. Princip was influenced by various political ideas, including socialism and anarchism. He admired Bogdan Žerajić, a man who had attempted an assassination against an official. Princip’s political passion led to his expulsion from school after participating in anti-Austrian demonstrations. He then traveled 280 kilometers on foot to Belgrade, Serbia.
In Serbia, Princip sought to join the military to fight for his cause.
During the First Balkan War, he volunteered with irregular Serbian forces. However, recruitment officers rejected him because he was too small and weak. This rejection is believed to have motivated him to seek a different way to act. Meanwhile, tensions in Bosnia grew. In 1913, the Austrian military governor, Oskar Potiorek, declared a state of emergency. He dissolved the parliament and banned many Serbian cultural and educational societies. These strict rules increased the desire for revolution among young Bosnians.
Princip eventually organized a plot to assassinate the heir to the Habsburg Empire.
He recruited two friends, Trifko Grabež and Nedeljko Čabrinović, to join him. The conspirators received help from a secret Serbian group known as the Black Hand. This group provided the weapons and the necessary training. Specifically, they supplied five Browning Model 1910 pistols, grenades, and poison. The group practiced their skills in the Topčider forest near Belgrade. Princip proved to be the most skilled marksman among the three young men.
On June 28, 1914, the assassination took place in Sarajevo.
As the royal couple traveled in a convertible car, Princip fired his pistol. The shots mortally wounded both Franz Ferdinand and Sophie. Princip was arrested immediately by the Austro-Hungarian authorities. He was tried alongside 24 other individuals. During his trial, Princip stated he was a Yugoslav nationalist. He argued that his goal was the unification of all Yugoslavs free from Austria. Because he was only 19 years old, he avoided the death penalty. Instead, he was sentenced to twenty years in prison.
Princip spent his remaining years in the Terezín Fortress.
The harsh conditions of the prison caused his health to decline rapidly. He suffered from tuberculosis, a serious respiratory disease. The illness was so severe that doctors had to amputate his right arm. Princip died in prison on April 28, 1918. His death occurred as the First World War was still being fought. His legacy remains a subject of intense debate among different groups of people.
Some view him as a hero who fought against oppression, while others see him as a terrorist.
The impact of Princip's actions was massive and global. The assassination provided the Austrian Foreign Office and Army with a reason for war. This conflict eventually involved many major world powers. The war changed borders, destroyed empires, and reshaped the map of Europe. Even today, the way people view Princip depends on their perspective of history and nationalism. His life serves as a powerful example of how local political struggles can escalate into massive international disasters.
