In 1931, a group of nine Black teenagers faced a very hard time.

These boys were riding a freight train between Chattanooga and Memphis. They were traveling as hoboes, which are people who ride trains to get around. During the trip, a fight broke out between some white youths and the Black teenagers. After the fight, two white girls, Victoria Price and Ruby Bates, said the boys had attacked them.

The police arrested the nine boys in Paint Rock, Alabama. This event became known as the Scottsboro Boys case. It is now seen as a major legal injustice in the United States.

The trials in Scottsboro did not follow fair rules.

The trials happened very quickly to avoid angry crowds. Some trials lasted only one day. The boys did not have good lawyers to defend them. One lawyer, Milo Moody, had not defended a case in many years. Another lawyer, Stephen Roddy, did not have time to prepare. Because of this, the boys could not properly tell their side of the story. Even though a doctor found no medical evidence of an attack, the boys were still found guilty.

Many people worked to change what was happening. The NAACP and the Communist Party USA helped bring the case to higher courts.

The case went to the U.S. Supreme Court twice. In a case called Powell v. Alabama in 1932, the Court ordered new trials. Later, in 1935, the Court ruled in Norris v. Alabama. This ruling said that African Americans must be included on juries. This was important because, at that time, Black people in Alabama were often kept off juries. These decisions changed how trials work in America.

The nine boys had different lives and stories.

Some boys faced very long prison sentences. Ozie Powell was even injured in prison during a fight with a deputy.

Clarence Norris was eventually pardoned by the Governor in 1976. He was the last survivor of the group and died in 1989.

This story helps us understand how laws should work. It shows why having a fair jury is so important for justice. The case is still studied in books, music, and movies today. It reminds people that everyone deserves a good lawyer and a fair chance. In 2013, the Alabama parole board even gave pardons to the remaining boys. This helped to correct some of the wrongs from a long time ago. The history of the Scottsboro Boys is a lesson about fairness and courage.
