He was born on July 25, 1941, in Chicago, Illinois. His mother was named Mamie Till-Bradley. Emmett grew up in a busy neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago. He was a smart dresser and liked to play baseball with his friends. He also enjoyed playing pranks on his cousins. Even though he had some health struggles, like a stutter from polio, he was a happy boy. His life was changed forever during a summer trip to the South.

In August 1955, Emmett went to visit relatives in Mississippi.

He stayed in the Mississippi Delta near a small town called Money. At that time, the South had very unfair laws called Jim Crow laws. These laws kept Black and white people apart in many ways. Many Black families had moved North to escape this unfair treatment. While visiting, Emmett went to Bryant's Grocery and Meat Market to buy candy.

People still disagree about what happened during his visit to the store. Some say he spoke to Carolyn Bryant, while others say he only whistled.

This interaction led to a terrible act of violence. Several nights later, two men named Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam took Emmett from his great-uncle's house. They beat him and killed him. They then placed his body in the Tallahatchie River.

His body was found three days later. This event was part of a long history of violence against African Americans. In the 1950s, Mississippi was one of the poorest states in the country. Many Black people there lived as sharecroppers and could not vote.

Emmett's mother, Mamie, made a very brave choice after he died.

Photos of the funeral were published in many magazines. These images showed the world the reality of racism in America. Many people across the country saw the photos and felt deeply moved. The news brought intense attention to the lack of civil rights in Mississippi.

Even though a jury found the killers not guilty, the event changed history.

The men later admitted to the crime in a magazine interview. His death helped spark the civil rights movement. This movement led to major changes, like the Montgomery bus boycott. Today, many places honor his memory. There is an Emmett Till Memorial Highway in Mississippi. In 2022, a new law called the Emmett Till Antilynching Act was signed into law.

He remains an important symbol for justice.
