He belonged to a group called the Beeliar. This group lived near the Swan and Canning rivers. Yagan was a very strong and tall man. He had a special tattoo on his right shoulder. This tattoo showed he was an important leader in his tribe. He was known to be a very skilled spear thrower.

When British settlers arrived in 1829, life changed for the Noongar. At first, the two groups lived together peacefully. They even shared fish with one another. However, the settlers began to build fences for their farms. These fences blocked the Noongar from their traditional hunting lands. The Noongar people also needed to protect their sacred sites. Because of this, conflicts between the two groups grew more frequent.

Conflict often happened because of different laws. Yagan and his father, Midgegooroo, led resistance against the settlers. In 1831, a settler named Thomas Smedley killed a member of Yagan's group. Following Noongar law, Yagan and his father sought justice. This led to more fights between the Noongar and the settlers. The government eventually offered a reward for Yagan's capture.

In 1833, Yagan was killed by two brothers named William and James Keats. The brothers killed him to claim the reward money. After he died, settlers took Yagan's head to London. It was shown in a museum as a curiosity.

It stayed in a museum in Liverpool for over one hundred years. The Noongar people never stopped asking for his remains to return home.

It took many years for Yagan to finally rest in peace. In 1997, his head was sent back to Australia. The Noongar people held many discussions about where he should go. Finally, in July 2010, he was buried in the Swan Valley. This happened 177 years after he died.
